The handwritten document illustrates at a very fundamental level the colonial practice of administration of the Dutch VOC. The manuscript in Dutch reveals various aspects including protocols, procedures, finances and administrative paperwork for VOC officers arriving in Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope. Among other instructions to be found is information on the cost of purchasing a black slave boy in Batavia and the expense of his upkeep.
