Portrait of Joseph Banks

This is a portrait of Joseph Banks, the British botanist and explorer who accompanied Captain James Cook on the voyage of the Endeavour. The portrait, engraved by William Dickson after the original oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, depicts Banks as a distinguished scholar and explorer, with a free-standing globe by his side. Banks would go on to become President of the Royal Society.
