This set of postcards is part of a series of postcards on Malayan Basketry and were printed in England by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd in the 1920s. The postcards were sold at the 1924 "British Empire" exhibition, held at Wembley Park in Middlesex. The objectives of the exhibition was to strengthen the bonds within the Empire, stimulate trade (at a time when Great Britain had economic woes), and demonstrate the greatness of the British both at home and abroad. These postcards not only provided the British people with a glimpse of life in Malaya (as a British colony), they also demonstrated the importance of Malaya's craft tradition of basket weaving, the abundance of resources, and resourcefulness of the people in Malaya. Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd started out as a small shop in October 1866 on Union Street in London, selling pictures and frames before becoming a distributor of graphic art printing.
