This photograph shows a group posing for the camera on a stage set, above which the words ‘Moonlight Opera’ is visible. ‘The Oleh Oleh Party of Singapore: 14, 15 & 16 April 1936’ is inscribed underneath the photograph. The Oleh Oleh Party was a popular amateur group in the 1930s known for their Wayang Peranakan (Peranakan theatre) performances. Wayang Perankan features cross-dressing actors and is performed in the Baba Malay patois. It was common for Peranakan amateurs to work together with professional Malay opera companies like Moonlight Opera.
