This photograph shows a group of young men from the Tiong Hwa Hway Kwan Student Band. They are each holding an instrument and dressed in uniform. Standing partially outside the frame is a fringed banner, with the words ‘Soerabaja’ and ‘Blass Muziek’ (wind music) visible. The Tiong Hwa Hwe Koan was founded in 1900 by a group of Chinese businessmen and journalists and aimed to promote the customs and language among the Indies Chinese. The first Tiong Hwa Hwe Koan Chinese school was established a year later.
