Our Home magazine, apr 1980

Our Home was a free publication distributed to all HDB tenants from 1972 to 1989. The magazines with their distinct covers helped to convey specific notions of Singaporean identity – one that was pluralistic and family-centred. Information on home improvements, social etiquette of living in flats, and several state –policies were also disseminated in these magazines. The covers are also of great visual interest as they illustrate the various types of HDB architecture as for example, point blocks and flat blocks, which were built in the 1970s and 1980s. Besides understanding changes in the designs made to the HDB flats, the magazines particularly help to help to understand the distinct vernacular architecture of Singapore’s social housing.
