This boolet from the Oriental Emporium is illustrative of the successes of the local Chinese businesses. By the end of 1950s the retail business for the local Chinese was thriving in Singapore. Outlets could be found in Chinatown and also the three Amuseument parks. In 1961, the Lim brothers (Lim Tow Seng and Lim Tow Yong) Teochew brothers from Swatow, founded the Emporium Holdings Group in Singapore. 5 years later they opened Oriental Emporium opposite Robinsons. In Raffles Place. The store was opened on Dec 1, 1966 by Soon Peng Yam, the president for the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce. They sold Chinese products. By 1980s they had outlets in several places in Malaysia and became so successful, that Lim Tow Yong was given the title Dato by the state of Negeri Sembilan.
