The Amboyna massacre took place in 1623 in light of mounting rivalry between the English and Dutch East India Companies in the spice trade. This resulted in ten English men in the service of the English East India Company being tortured, imprisoned and eventually executed by the Dutch. This print is based upon the English account of this incident.
