This portrait of Queen Elizabeth I of England commemorates the English defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. It depicts the Queen in the "superb dress" she wore to St Paul's Cathedral to give thanks, with a sceptre in her right hand and an orb in her left. This mezzotint print was engraved by Charles Turner, who based his work on a rare print by Crispijn de Passe the Elder, who in turn based his work on an original drawing by Isaac Oliver.
