Zouk nightclub operated out of three first restored godowns at Jiak Kim Street when it first opened to the public in March 1991. This was Zouk’s home for 25 years until its relocation to Clarke Quay’s Cannery Block at the end of 2016. Zouk at Jiak Kim Street had four signature zones in the nightclub: Zouk, Phuture, Velvet Underground and the Wine Bar. Velvet Underground opened in July 1994 after the restaurant space was converted into an exclusive enclave for members, making it Singapore’s first dance membership club then. Velvet Underground had its own private entrance and was known for its thick velvet-covered walls and iconic artwork. It catered to older Zouk patrons with a more relaxed lounge space that played house and soul music.
