Zouk nightclub operated out of three first restored godowns at Jiak Kim Street when it first opened to the public in March 1991. This was Zouk’s home for 25 years until its relocation to Clarke Quay’s Cannery Block at the end of 2016. Zouk at Jiak Kim Street had four signature zones in the nightclub: Zouk, Phuture, Velvet Underground and the Wine Bar. Phuture was established in December 1996 as a more avant-garde bar that featured non-mainstream music such as hip hop, R&B and urban music. It was previously an MTV bar where one could watch music videos from American cable television channel MTV. Located deep within the interior of the Zouk nightclub complex, Phuture was characterised by its vibrant colours, futuristic design and impressive LED wall.
