Tan Cheng Siang(1885-1977) looks out confidently at the viewer in this studio photograph. Wearing a double breasted suit, complete with a boutonniere and pocket watch, he sits before a plain backdrop with a panama hat by his side. The shop mark ‘Koon Sun Photographer, Singapore’ can be seen on the photograph. Koon Sun Photo Studio was located along South Bridge Road in Singapore’s city centre. It was one of the two photographic studios established by Lee Tat Loon and Lee Tit Loon, whose son went on to found Lee Brothers Studio. This photograph came from the collection of Botan House, the ancestral home said to have been built by Tan Kim Tian.
