This large dish is painted with a floral decoration known as the ‘China aster’ or ‘Aster pattern’, which some scholars have identified to be a stylized representation of chrysanthemums. This Chinese porcelain motif was popular among overseas consumers in the Ottoman empire, Arab world and Europe. Large Chinese porcelain dishes were popular with Muslim consumers in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, as they served their communal dining habits well. In Indonesia, these large-sized porcelains were also occasionally used as offering dishes in ritual ceremonies.
