Joseph Tan Chan Jin (1941-2001) is noted as an artist, activist and educator, art manager and former acting director of the National Art Gallery, Malaysia. He worked across multiple mediums, ranging from paintings, collage, print-making and sculpture. His oeuvre bears a spectrum of influences, at times structured through his formal training and often through eclectic moods within Malaysian art as it evolved in the post-independence period. In describing Tan’s different junctures of development, some scholars have adopted the phrases Expressionism and Pop-Art.
