Wu Guanzhong (1919 - 2010) is one of the most significant artists of 20th century China. He belonged to a generation of Chinese painters who went to France to study art in the 1940s. His distinctive style integrates Western and Chinese art traditions, setting a new direction for modern Chinese art. Running Stream us a representative work of Wu's from the 1980s. Wu painted bold black strokes for the trees, quick washes for the running stream and included his iconic dots of colours for flowers and plants. From his inscription, it is also indicated that this was a scene from the bottom of the Jade Dragon Mountain, a subject that Wu revisits often in his artistic practice.
