This instructional booklet provides basic lessons on common Malay words that are used in everyday conversations. These lessons were printed in The Daily Mail and Radio Weekly, and aired on Radio Malaysia and Radio Singapura as well. This booklet was published by the Dewan Bahasa Dan Kebudayaan Kebangsaan (DBKK), or Institute of National Language and Culture, which was established in 1960. This was part of the government’s larger initiative to promote Malay as the national language, as well as a Malayan culture. Besides publications, the DBKK also organised a National Language week, conferences for writers, competitions, exhibitions and cultural shows among other events to promote the national language.
