Pre-prepared slipper faces were sold by itinerant haberdashers, where the design was cut from cardboard and pasted on a fabric base. Cardboard details would have been embroidered over to achieve raised thread embroidery. The design on the yellow velvet slipper face consists of a figure of a bird surrounded by foliage and flowers in bloom. A border of different colours and abstract motifs lines the inner edge of the vamp. The acquisition contains numerous examples of templates, patterns and tools embroiderers used in the making of beadwork pieces.
