Display stand

This huangyangmu (boxwood) stand has been carved, at least partially, to appear like a natural root formation. It consists of a flat upper surface supported by gnarled, intertwining roots. The Chinese literati favoured furnishings that alluded to nature in form as well as materiality. Made of wood or stone, these items which included tables, stools and stands were also often depicted in Ming and Qing paintings.
