This brass oil lamp was used by Peranakans for their altars and was placed within a red and gold lamp screen. Together, they were placed at a corner of the higher altar table. The key function of the oil lamp was to keep a constant fire burning, especially for the burning of joss sticks used for prayers.In particular, this oil lamp belonged to the family of Mdm Chua Geok Choo and Tan Eng Wah (1923-2013). It was passed down Mdm Chua’s side of the family and was used for the worship of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy; in the family home at East Coast Avenue.Tan Eng Wah was also the eldest son of Tan Lark Sye (1897-1972). Tan Lark Sye was a highly regarded Chinese businessman and philanthropist in Singapore.
