This purse is embroidered with a figure of a dragon on one side and a phoenix on the other. As shown on this piece, the phoenix is a combination of the neck of a crane, feathers of a golden pheasant and tail of a peacock, which is effectively depicted here with both metal and glass seed beads. It was a symbol of honour and riches. It was said to appear only in times of peace.
