Pair of slipper faces

This pair of uncut slipper faces is designed with silver wrapped thread embroidered onto brown velvet in the shape of floral sprays. The slipper faces would be subsequently cut out and sent to Chinese shoemakers to be sewn into a pair of shoesThis is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
