Pair of pointed shoes

This pair of green velvet shoes has an upturned curved front end, like a horn. It is decorated with sequins and silver thread. It is likely that this pair of shoes were likely derived from earlier footwear introduced into the region, particularly in Sulawesi, as part of the bride’s wedding outfit. These “Chinese-style” shoes were not worn exclusively by the Peranakan Chinese, but instead were worn by other regional communities in the East Indies. They demonstrate the share material culture of the region and the cross-cultural interactions between communities contributing the development of a Peranakan-style of embroidery in the Indies.
