This pair of chair covers is highly unusual for its integration of beadwork and embroidery. Based on its techniques, it is most likely made in Java. Beaded phoenixes and peonies decorated the central octagon made of green velvet. The borders of the covers are embellished with round mirrors. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
