This long rectangular hanging is decorated by scenes of the Daoist pantheon on the lower panel. Embroidered hangings like this would have been produced in China and imported by Peranakan families in Indonesia and the Straits Settlements. This hanging would have likely been placed above the deity altar on special occasions such as Chinese New Year. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
