Known as a baju peiki or baju shanghai, this long-sleeved jacket with a mandarin collar and frog buttons is made from a richly patterned cream silk fabric and thickly lined on the inside. Its hem and cuffs are formed by rows of elaborate and dense pleats. The label reads, ‘The Yang Wat, Soerabaia.’ The matching skirt or koon is made using the same material and techniques. The cotton baju peiki could have been paired with batik sarong in less formal occasions. It is part of a donation which contains a mixture of garments worn by Peranakan men and women.
