This is an embroidered and beaded sirih box cover. Its rectangular shape would be placed atop a similar shaped box which would contain the various sirih receptacles. Birds, flowers and insects made out of seed beads decorate the velvet base of this cover.This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
