During the Second World War and the and the subsequent Japanese Occupation (1942 – 1945), Indians in Singapore had a diverse range of experiences; some left for India as refugees; some joined the Indian National Army; some were recruited for the Death Railway; and some strove to make ends meet and simply survive. This is a medal given by the Indian National Army to Indra Menon, in recognition of the dance performances she gave to entertain the INA troops stationed in Singapore, as part of the recreational activities organised for them.
