Pair of slipper faces

Coloured seed beads are sewn onto a base velvet fabric using the technique called bead embroidery. These slipper faces are decorated with flowers and butterflies. They were to be cut and sent to Chinese shoemakers to be turned into slippers. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
