This rectangular bead embroidered panel is decorated in the centre with large red roses flanked by phoenixes on a white base. This central rectangle is surrounded by a border of blue and purple flowers on a background of yellow beads. Bead embroidery was a popular method of Peranakan beadwork and is still practiced today with slippers and other small personal affects. Embroidering beads require the use of a pidangan or embroidery frame as a structural support. The beads used on this panel are known as manek potong or cut beads. These beads would have been imported to the Straits Settlements from Europe.
