Open toed beaded slippers

This pair of open toed beaded slippers with a thin slipper face decorated with pink flowers and leaves on a green background with an edge of red triangles, similar to those found at the edge of batik sarongs. A shop mark reading “SCHOENMAKER (MARDJOEKI) TJIANDJOER” indicates that the pair is made in Indonesia. Beaded slippers, known as kasut manek in Baba Malay date back to the early 20th century and were worn by Peranakan men and women. The slipper faces were beaded on a frame or pidangan and then a Chinese shoe maker would attach it to a leather slipper base.
