This dish with deep well and cusped rim has a design of flowers and cypress trees, recurring motifs in Ottoman art. Cypress trees are often planted in cemeteries and mosque courtyards.Blue and white porcelain from China’s Yuan and Ming dynasties was avidly collected by the Islamic courts in Iran and Turkey. These designs had enormous influence on Turkish potters. This dish is an early example of Turkish variation on Chinese blue and white designs. The organic floral and foliate designs blend traditional Islamic motifs like arabesques with Chinese designs.
