These four photographs show Maggie Lim (1913 – 1995), a pioneer public health officer and Singapore’s first female Queen’s Scholar. After qualifying as a doctor in London, she became a public health officer in Singapore and campaigned to raise awareness of birth control. She was Honorary Medical Officer of the newly-founded Family Planning Association in 1949, and was responsible for recruiting doctors, recommending forms of contraception and helping to manage clinics. In 1963 she became the head of the Ministry of Health’s Maternity and Child Welfare Department.
