The two Buddhas, Shakyamuni (Shijiamouni释迦牟尼佛, Buddha of the present) and Prabhutaratna (Duobao多宝佛, Buddha of the past), sit side by side on a throne flanked by two bodhisattvas. The image of two sitting Buddhas derives from The Lotus Sutra, chapter XI, “The Appearance of a Jeweled Stupa” (妙法莲华经：第十一 见宝塔品). When Shakyamuni was teaching The Lotus Sutra, Prabhutaratna showed up and offered half of his seat to Shakyamuni, therefore they preach together. The inscription is dated the second year of Lingde of the Great Tang, i.e., 664–665. Ten lines of inscriptions were craved at the back of the sculpture. The style of the calligraphy resembles that on the famous Stele of Long cang Monastery龍藏寺碑 of AD 586.
