Tay Boon Pin (b.1936) received training at NAFA, graduating in 1956. Prior to that, he was a student at Chung Cheng High School. Tay was invited to participate in the Singapore Chinese High Schools’ Graduates of 1953 Arts Association travelling exhibition in 1955, and was one of the early members of the Equator Art Society (EAS).This body of sketches produced by the artist is significant to the understanding of the development of social realist movement in Singapore, particularly the ways in which EAS practised art during its early years in the 1950s and 1960s. The works also aid in our understanding of the methodology which EAS utilised in its approach towards realism during that time.
