Pair of slipper faces

This pair of slipper faces is made using a technique of embroidery known as tekat timbul. This is a method where two needles secure a flat silver wire would back and forth over cotton padding. The slipper faces would be subsequently cut out and sent to Chinese shoemakers to be sewn into a pair of shoes. This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
