The earliest community centre in Singapore dates back to the late 1940s and had the aim of fostering social cohesion within a community. Besides disseminating information and government policies, and gathering feedback from the grassroots, community centres helped to promote social unity, multi-racial harmony and national identity. The youth group children’s club was a part of the community centre and was an attempt to encourage youths to be involved in sports and other activities rather than drugs and triads.
