This red wooden panel with gold Chinese characters spells out the phrase Jin Yuan or 錦源. This panel, known as a Jiho was hung outside the ancestral home of Singapore Peranakan playwright, Robert Yeo in Valley Road. Panels like this were often found outside homes to identify the residence or outside shops and places of business. Robert Yeo was born in 1940 to a Peranakan family and grew up with his grandparents in their family homes in Haig Road and Valley Road in Hougang. He has been lauded as being “the most Singaporean of Singaporean writers”.
