This sculpture represents the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Clasping her hands in prayer, the Virgin stands on a serpent encircling a sphere, along with a crescent moon. Three kneeling angels support the globe. The triangular wooden base is decorated with ivory plaques carved with floral forms typical of Mughal decoration. The object was probably carved in Goa for the Mughal court, which favoured decorative schemes like this.
