Yeo Hiap Seng (YHS) was the first manufacturer in the world to introduce ultra-heat treatment process in 1967 during the packaging of its drinks. In the 1960s, apart from drinks such as soya bean milk and Asian beverages such as Chrysanthemum tea, YHS’s food products included canned shark’s fin soup, fish ball soup, bamboo shoots and instant noodles, with most of these products being exported. The company also became the first food manufacturer in the world to package soft drinks in Tetra Brik cartons. This set of artefacts was part of the selection in the time capsule buried in 1990 by then DPM Ong Teng Cheong to celebrate Singapore’s 50th anniversary of independence in 2015.
