This green kebaya was worn by Margaret Chan in her 1993 charity performance of Emily of Emerald Hill during the second act. It is decorated by embroidered Japanese ladies in kimonos and carrying umbrellas. The Japanese theme is meant to be a representation of the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, a turning point for the fortunes of Emily Gan, the title character. Written by Stella Kon in 1982, Emily of Emerald Hill tells the story of a Peranakan woman from young bride to strong-willed matriarch in the Peranakan enclave of Emerald Hill, in Singapore.
