Green panel with squirrels

This rectangular green panel is decorated with a large pink flower at its centre. The smaller rectangle is decorated with other flowers and two birds. Surrounding this smaller rectangle are four squirrels at the corners of the panel of different shades. Though they did not represent particular auspicious meanings, squirrels were a popular animal for beaded panels, as designs were often copied from Victorian cross-stitch sourcesBead embroidery was a popular method of Peranakan beadwork and is still practiced today with slippers and other small personal affects. The beads used on this panel are known as manek potong or cut beads, and would have been imported to the Straits Settlements from Europe.
