This beaded fertility hanging is decorated with repeated geometric patterns. It is possibly one of a pair as such hangings usually came as part of a set. Auspicious hangings were used on wedding beds to bless the marriage in the hope that the first-born will be a son that will carry on the family name. Examples of these include prawns, fish, crabs, butterflies, rodents, flowers such as the peony in full bloom and scrolling foliage. The Peranakan community found in Myanmar is believed to originate in Penang, having settled there as a result of trade within the British empire.
