This figure of the Tantric deity Vajrasattva is seated on a double lotus throne, the right hand holds the ritual thunder bolt or vajra to the chest and the left grasps another ritual implement. Finely worked details include jewellery, Buddha images in the tall hairdo and raised spiral and saw-tooth patterns around the large aureole at the back of the throne. The throne with ribboned umbrella at the top is reminiscent of Pala bronzes. Tantric and Mahayana deities of the Srivijaya period have been found across a wide region from Thailand, to the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra. Seated figures such as this often show a mix of cultural influences, including Pala and Javanese art styles.
