This miniature pagdi or turban has been wrapped in the style popular in the Pune region of Maharashtra from the 19th century, using paithani fabric. Paithani is a style of hand-weaving that originated in the Deccan region of India, near Paithan in Maharashtra. Paithani weaving uses either silk or cotton with zari (gold thread) to create finely woven, dual-tone fabric. This shape was popularised in the 19th century, and has become quite popular as an accessory for Ganesha idols made during the Ganesha festival that is widely celebrated in the region.
