This cotton batik textile is drawn in a European art deco style that was popular during the 1920s and 30s. It demonstrates the significant impact of Western art among Indonesian batik artists in the period. The cloth does not appear to have been used as a garment but may have been commissioned to be framed for display, possibly as advertising. It was owned by a lady living in Batavia during the Japanese occupation period from 1942 - 45.
