This is a ‘Guide to the Dutch East Indies’, written by invitation of the Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, or Royal Packet Navigation Company, a Dutch shipping company. The shipping line included stops at the ports of Singapore, Hong Kong and Sydney. The company was also involved in tourism, and built a hotel in Bali in 1928. This guide introduces readers to regions such as Batavia, Weltevreden and West Java. It includes personal anecdotes of the writer, Johan Frans van Bemmelen, such as his ascent up Mount Merapi.
