Silverster was an English musician, bandleader and dancer who was a significant figure in the development of ballroom dancing in the early 20th century. He formed his band in 1935 playing ballroom music and by 1958, was one of the most successful band leaders in Britain. These songs were recorded by Columbia records, which were established in 1888, evolving from the earlier American Gramophone Company. Music from England and America were gaining popularity amongst Peranakans in Singapore and the Straits during the early 20th century. Musical bands and troupes were formed during this period and they would perform at celebratory occasions organized by Peranakans such as birthdays and weddings.
