Ijar are loose trousers or pyjamas that form a basic element of traditional Parsi clothing. Most often ijar would be worn with a tunic or jhabla by young Parsi boys and girls, although they could also be worn by women under their gara saris. The ijar would have an embroidered border at the bottom edge of both legs. The embroidery matched the garas or the jhablas, often being pastel coloured, done in the Chinese style with double silk thread. This ijar cloth is unstitched, but carries an embroidered border. It is further marked with a Chinese stamp for export, underlining the Parsi links to the India-China trade, which attributed for a great part of the community’s wealth and high social status under the colonial administration in India.
