The two 19th-century views of Chinese trading ports in Fujian province are typical of the souvenirs brought back home to the West by foreign traders. Xiamen (Amoy) and Fuzhou (Foochow) were both ports open to Western trade after the signing of the Treaty of Nanking (1842). The tiered pagoda atop the hill is in Fuzhou is one of two Tang-era pagodas that remain as landmarks of the city. The boats in the harbour would have carried tea and ceramics, along with other commodities, to faraway ports. Fujian province is the ancestral home of many Southeast Asia Chinese.
