Pair of gilded angels

This Pair of gilded angel figurines shows the amalgamation of Christian and Hindu art in Kerala. While Christianity has been widely practiced in Kerala from the 1st century, European-style church decoration – including sculpture and painting, church facades, pulpits and altarpieces – only came in with the Portuguese and their colonial successors. The angels show a marked influence of contemporary Hindu art, with the emphasis on the female form, stylized hair and posture.
